Mary Jane McGaughey and Brent (Kiwi) Smith's Easy Acres Farm is establishing itself as an ideal facility for breaking and training yearlings. The 12-acre facility nestled in the heart of thoroughbred country places an emphasis on attention to detail in an effort to produce optimum results at the racetrack and the sales ring.
Mary Jane and Kiwi both have impressive backgrounds, having worked in the thoroughbred industry for decades, and it's that same knowledge and experience that has successfully created a productive working environment.
Mary Jane McGaughey has had the opportunity to work with a number of horses and people who have gone onto legendary careers in the sport of thoroughbred racing. Born into a Kentucky racing family, Mary Jane has always been around horses. Her father and his twin brother worked for the Thoroughbred Record for over 30 years, her uncle in the artwork/photo department, with her father managing the press room for the magazine, in addition to his responsibilities of helping to put together the Keeneland program.
She would learn the thoroughbred industry from the ground up, walking hots and eventually becoming a licensed thoroughbred trainer.
Her expertise comes first hand from working with trainers like Frank Whiteley, where she had the opportunity to work with arguably the greatest filly of all time, the ill-fated Ruffian. Other trainers include David Whiteley, Pat Kelly, and her former husband, Hall of Fame trainer Claude "Shug" McGaughey. She's galloped and worked around some of the countries best horses like Forego, Junction, Medieval Man, Easy Goer, Mining, and Personal Ensign.
Brent (Kiwi) Smith hails from the North Island of New Zealand where he briefly rode races and worked for some of the islands top trainers. Emigrating to the U.S. in the early 1980's Kiwi further honed his horsemanship skills and his resume includes working for some of the Nations finest trainers including Hall of Fame conditioners D. Wayne Lukas and Flint "Scotty" Schulhofer. He's worked with and ridden such top notch horses as 1986 Horse of the Year Lady's Secret, 1984 Eclipse Award winning Three Year Old Filly, Life's Magic and multiple G1 winner and millionaire Sewickley.
In addition Kiwi is an avid golfer and recently scored his second in his lifetime hole in one!
He currently serves as an assistant trainer to Charles LoPresti.
The McGaughey-Smith's also breed registered miniature donkeys and registered miniature sheep. Mary Jane's other hobby is her craft business, A Way With Color, LLC. Click on the links to learn more.
